CHAPTER 19
JOEY
I hand Isabella a bottle of water, and she gulps down nearly half of it. âHow did you get here without them noticing you?â
Isabella shakes her head. âI hid out by Daddyâs old barn when they came. Some of them stayed the night at the house. When they left, I took off running through the woods so I could come here.â
To think Sunny and Timmy went out doesnât sit well with me. âYou canât go back out there. Youâve got to stay here with us now.â
Isabella sits down on the couch, and tears stream down her face. âThere were ten of them, and I had to watch them kill all of my family. One by one, they slit all their necks.â
Avaâs eyes get wide, and she shakes her head. âIâm so sorry you had to experience something horrific.â
I wrap my arms around her as sobs escape from her lips. Iâm angry with myself for allowing this to happen. If I would have went there last night, I could have stopped this from happening. Several seconds pass, and after sheâs no longer crying is when I speak. âHave you ever seen those people before?â I ask.
Iâm trying to get a handle on where those people came from.
Isabella sniffs. âWe went to go get our box the day before yesterday. Those people were on top of the building and wouldnât let us get anything. Daddy told them off before we left. I guess one of them followed us out of town when we went searching for food.â
I donât understand why Henry didnât come here and mention it to me. Maybe he got busy and had other things that needed to be done. The two of us would talk every week to check on one another. Seeing we have always been in such proximity with being neighbors.
Landon comes out of his bedroom and joins us in the living room. âI heard what you told my dad. Youâre more than welcome to sleep in my room.â
Isabella stares down at her hands and then looks at us again. Her hazel eyes are puffy from crying so much. âIâm not going to be sleeping in anyoneâs room. I was scratched in the back by a zombie this morning. I just came here to warn you.â
I lift up the back of her shirt to see if what she says is true. Thereâs two deep claw marks on her back.
Landonâs eyes go wide. âYou survived monstrous human beings but not a zombie. This shit is so fucked up.â
I put her shirt back down, speechless. Iâve known her for the past year. Sheâs only eighteen. Itâs much too young to die. Sheâs got her entire life ahead.
I get up from the couch, unable to sit in here another minute. Iâve got to go outside and clear my head. Iâm about to fucking blow.
I open up the door and sit down on the porch steps. The inferno burning inside me erupts. These fuckers who did this to my friends are going to pay.
