CHAPTER 19

JOEY

I hand Isabella a bottle of water, and she gulps down nearly half of it. “How did you get here without them noticing you?”

Isabella shakes her head. “I hid out by Daddy’s old barn when they came. Some of them stayed the night at the house. When they left, I took off running through the woods so I could come here.”

To think Sunny and Timmy went out doesn’t sit well with me. “You can’t go back out there. You’ve got to stay here with us now.”

Isabella sits down on the couch, and tears stream down her face. “There were ten of them, and I had to watch them kill all of my family. One by one, they slit all their necks.”

Ava’s eyes get wide, and she shakes her head. “I’m so sorry you had to experience something horrific.”

I wrap my arms around her as sobs escape from her lips. I’m angry with myself for allowing this to happen. If I would have went there last night, I could have stopped this from happening. Several seconds pass, and after she’s no longer crying is when I speak. “Have you ever seen those people before?” I ask.

I’m trying to get a handle on where those people came from.

Isabella sniffs. “We went to go get our box the day before yesterday. Those people were on top of the building and wouldn’t let us get anything. Daddy told them off before we left. I guess one of them followed us out of town when we went searching for food.”

I don’t understand why Henry didn’t come here and mention it to me. Maybe he got busy and had other things that needed to be done. The two of us would talk every week to check on one another. Seeing we have always been in such proximity with being neighbors.

Landon comes out of his bedroom and joins us in the living room. “I heard what you told my dad. You’re more than welcome to sleep in my room.”

Isabella stares down at her hands and then looks at us again. Her hazel eyes are puffy from crying so much. “I’m not going to be sleeping in anyone’s room. I was scratched in the back by a zombie this morning. I just came here to warn you.”

I lift up the back of her shirt to see if what she says is true. There’s two deep claw marks on her back.

Landon’s eyes go wide. “You survived monstrous human beings but not a zombie. This shit is so fucked up.”

I put her shirt back down, speechless. I’ve known her for the past year. She’s only eighteen. It’s much too young to die. She’s got her entire life ahead.

I get up from the couch, unable to sit in here another minute. I’ve got to go outside and clear my head. I’m about to fucking blow.

I open up the door and sit down on the porch steps. The inferno burning inside me erupts. These fuckers who did this to my friends are going to pay.
